DIY Super Hero Outfit (using a vintage pillowcase)
This was one of those spur of the moment project type sewing projects. Isabelle is always grabbing Pipi’s muslin wraps/ baby blankets and asking me to tie them round her neck as her “Super Isabelle” cape and then she runs off round on her super hero adventures. (Case in point here.) The result of this is that I end up washing the baby blankets twice as much as normal.
Anyway on Monday she grabbed a blanket right out of the clean washing basket and asked if I could tie on her cape. Instead I said would you like me to make one? When she and Pipi both went down for their nap I searched my stash for some fabric to use, and then this vintage pillow case just leapt out at me. Using this meant saving on sewing time – and I’m all about ways to save time (at least where the finish isn’t compromised.)
I made the mask using 2 layers of felt glued together with elastic sandwiched in between. I cut the flap of fabric from the pillowcase (you know the bit that folds over your pillow) and attached a bit of it with vliesofix to the mask. I then topstitched around the whole thing.
The cape was the easiest bit. I sewed up the open end of the pillow case (close to the edge) and the then sewed a line parallel to this one about 3cm down. I unpicked the seams in between these two lines on each side (see top right image, above) and threaded thin elastic through. I then the two raw edges of the elastic together… And BAM you have a cape! Easy as!
The Pip-squeak woke up just as I was finishing and was happy to model the outfit for me.
Super Isabelle woke up shortly after (note the bed hair and rosy cheeks in the pics above). She was excited about the outfit, but a little more interested in her afternoon tea!
